Safer Skincare

Our skin is our largest organ. As athletes, we pay a lot of attention to fueling our bodies and making sure we aren’t eating junk. So why are we putting junk onto our bodies (where it eventually gets absorbed into our bodies)?

I’ve always struggled with acne. It started in middle school and has continued well into adulthood. My dermatologist recommended Cetaphil as a cleanser and suggested that I try birth control to help my skin. In my 20s, my skin got better, but I continued to have breakouts. In my 30s after healing my gut, fixing my hormones, and was avoiding foods that are commonly associated with breakouts (such as dairy and soy), I still got regular breakouts.

It wasn’t until I started paying attention to what I was putting on my skin that I realized how incredibly important the products you use are. While the same rules for the ingredients in food don’t apply to beauty products (the if you can’t pronounce it don’t eat it rule doesn’t apply to skincare or cosmetics), I did learn that the product that were recommended my dermatologist was full of endocrine disruptors and other questionable ingredients.

The truth is, there are over 80,000 chemicals on the market today, many with little to no safety data

I assumed that since we live in a country where most things are regulated, the products I was buying in the store must be safe. But I learned that regulation does not equal safety when it comes to food or personal care products, I started searching for better options.

As I started to learn more, I started making simple swaps (rather than purging everything in my bathroom at once). I started with thing that actually went into or near my mouth. Things like toothpaste and lip balm. Then I worked on things that stayed on my skin like moisturizer, makeup, and sunscreen.

Did you know that the European Union Bans over 1400 chemical substances from their skincare products, while the U.S. has only banned thirty.

I don’t know about you, but I’m not excited about using the other 1370 harmful chemicals that are too dangerous for Europeans to use but apparently ok for Americans. That’s not good enough for me.

we need to do better. We deserve better

In a time when health issues are on the rise - things like asthma, allergies, infertility, cancer, and other chronic illnesses, it’s up to us to make more informed decisions about what goes into and onto our bodies.

The worst part is that the Food and Drug Administration (the agency that regulates cosmetics), who we assume is trying to keep us safe, allows companies to use chemicals that are known to be harmful (lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates) in the products that we put on our biggest organ every single day.

A 2013 study published by the UC Berkeley's School of Public Health noted that lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum, and five other meals were found in several popular brands of lipstick and lipgloss. The study noted that the presence of the metals is not the issue, but the concentrations at which they are found. Some were found at concentrations that could have long term effects on health and the study advised caution for children as meals such as lead are particularly dangerous for their growth and development.

Another thing to keep in mind is that these ingredients are sneaky (well, the companies who use them are sneaky) and they can be found in products under different names. If reading labels and trying to remember which ingredients to avoid is overwhelming, make sure to check out the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database (the Think Dirty app for you phone is also great). You can look up over 60,000 products and see detailed information about ingredients and overall product rating. I always try to choose products with a rating of 1 or 2. I also like that I can see why certain ingredients in products are harmful (allergen, carcinogen, etc.).

It is important to remember that not all companies disclose all ingredients (because they aren’t required to). They are also not tested by a third party, so it’s impossible to know that what is listed on the label is what is actually in the product.

This is where Beautycounter comes to the rescue.

why beautycounter is different

The mission of Beautycounter is to get safer products into the hands of everyone.

  • Beautycounter chooses to ban over 1,500 ingredients setting a new health and safety standard—all while providing a product that performs and is as luxurious as any high-end shampoo, lipstick or oil.

  • Beautycounter screens EVERY ingredient for safety, looking for potential hazards such as cancer, developmental toxicity, hormone disruption, and infertility.

  • Beautycounter does not test products or ingredients on animals.

  • Beautycounter sources ingredients responsibly. Over 80% of the ingredients are organic, natural or plant-derived. The others are synthetic, but screened and safe. They choose to use synthetic ingredients where there isn’t a natural ingredient that meets their rigorous safety standards.

  • Beautycounter believes in transparency and shares EVERY ingredient used. There are no hidden flavors, fragrances or secret preservatives left off of the labels.

  • Beautycounter third party batch tests their products for heavy metals, which are harmful many are classified as neurotoxins. Heavy metals, such as lead, are linked to birth defects, impaired brain functioning, and other issues.

  • Beautycounter is working to get stronger legislation passed so the products we use will be held to higher and safer standards.

There are decades of data that show that health issues are on the rise, due at least in part to our continuous exposure to harmful chemicals. The food we eat, what we use to clean our house, what we put on our bodies in the shower, or what we are exposed to in the environment we live in.

But we deserve better.

Despite the fact that I’ve just spent several hundred words telling you why I thought it was important to make changes in my life and how I went about that, it’s important that you do your own research and chose what is safe for you and your family. And even though I believe in the safety of Beautycounter, I understand that you may not agree. No product is perfect and we all have to make the best choices we can.

DISCLAIMER: While I truly love Beautycounter, I don’t use their products exclusively. I’m also a huge fan of Primally Pure, FatCo, and Everyone Organics for body lotion and inexpensive shower gel.

Please keep in mind that while this information may seem overwhelming, knowledge is power and now that you know better, you can do better.

It truly isn’t possible to avoid every harmful chemical out there. And rather than trying to replace everything all at once, simply replace items as you run out of them with a safer option. The small choices you make every day do add up. Just like training for a race or competition, it’s about progress, not perfection.

A Few of my favorite things

Prior to using Beautycounter products, I hadn't washed my face in two or three years. Previously, I oil cleansed with FatCo cleansing oil. That was until l I tried the Charcoal Cleansing Bar from Beautycounter (I still love and recommend FatCo, it just wasn’t right for my skin anymore).

Who knew that you could be obsessed with and love a bar of soap (made out of charcoal nonetheless) so much? This soap helps breakouts to calm much faster than they would on their own. Like less pain and less redness in two days instead of four or five. That was a game changer for me.

Charcoal Cleansing Bar

This soap clarifies and detoxifies our skin by pulling out dirt, impurities and excess oil, without drying. It uses organic witch hazel for toning, antioxidant-rich organic green tea to calm inflammation and organic coconut oil and sunflower oil to hydrate our skin. This was the first product I tried and was a skin game changer for me!

Balancing Charcoal Mask

So I don't use this everyday, but this was the second product I ever tried and combined with the charcoal bar, completely changed my acne-prone skin. I use it once a week to keep my skin clear and happy.

I also use this for spot treatment in addition to an all over face mask.

Tint Skin Foundation

Finally, a nontoxic makeup that actually works! Beautycounter's makeup comes in great colors and feels light on your skin. My favorite part is that it doesn't clog up my acne-prone skin.

The best part is that it stays on and looks great all day. You can finish it with the mattifying powder or any of the sprays.

Lip Gloss

Lipstick & lip gloss are some of the most toxic products on the market, and since they go on your lips you can almost guarantee that you ingest them!

I love this lip gloss, it goes on smooth, looks great, comes in good colors (there's a new bare shimmer color that's amazing), and it's safe to use on/near your mouth!

Feel free to email me: hello[at]marthaflorence . com with any questions about my skincare routine. If you’re struggling with skin issues, I’m more than happy to share what I’ve learned with you. You can also fill out my skincare questionnaire and I’ll get back to you with completely personalized recommendations for your skin.
