Lavaman Training - Week 10
There's not much to talk about this week since I got sick at the end of last week and have done very little since. I'm still not quite well, but by Saturday I felt well enough to get my butt out the door for a run. Once I was on the mend, my workout attempts were foiled by the terrible coughing fit I had every time I got up. Not cool body, not cool.
Even though this week's training was pretty light, I had a few major breakthroughs. First of all my long run (which was suppose to be 1:30 but turned into 1:40 due to my slowness) exceeded my expectations on all fronts. I started out thinking I would just walk whenever I needed to, which turned out to be not that much. I wasn't sure how my sad, congested lungs were going to handle being put to work. They handled it pretty well and I only started coughing when I stopped running.
One thing that I did before I left, which might have been a game changer for me, was get rid of the field on my watch that tells me my lap pace. Sometimes I get so caught up in the numbers that I psych myself out and talk myself out of running fast or beat myself up for running slow. Not having that information easily accessible made a huge difference!
Another thing that happened that has absolutely never happened before is that my uphill times were faster than my downhill times. What?!? I was shocked to see that. I think it was mostly because I did more walking on the way home but whatever the reason, it happened and I should be a little excited about that. I also ran up a hill without slowing down or really even noticing that I was going uphill (also something that never happens, I hate running uphill and am insanely slow at it).
On my Sunday bike ride, the game changer was putting more air in my tires. Even though my legs were totally and completely done from my run on Saturday, I felt like I was flying on my bike!
Considering that I'm getting over an illness and this week's training was only two days, I feel pretty good about the work that I did! I'm not sure if it is because I was well rested or because I've just managed to get out of my own way, but I'm really loving the way I feel about training right now.
